UN Marks May 29 as International Day of Peacekeepers

Politics

The United Nations General Assembly has designated May 29 as the International Day of Peacekeepers of this organization in honor of those who have lost their lives for the cause of peace, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

For nearly 80 years, United Nations peacekeepers have saved and changed lives in some of the world's most fragile political and security situations, helping many countries successfully navigate the difficult path from war to peace, such as Liberia, Namibia, Cambodia, Sierra Leone, East Timor.

Today, over 76 civilian, military and police personnel are deployed in 11 missions.

The challenges they face are greater than ever, as growing divisions among member states have weakened the collective capacity to support political and peace processes.

Peacekeepers face terrorists, criminals, armed groups and their allies, who have access to modern weapons and a vested interest in perpetuating the chaos in which they thrive.

Of the 26 peacekeepers who lost their lives in 2024, five were killed in hostile incidents.

The sacrifice of 4 peacekeepers who have given their lives over the decades is always remembered.
