Mitsotakis emphasized that the UN, as the custodian of the Law of the Sea, is central to addressing maritime challenges such as smuggling, terrorism, piracy, hybrid attacks, and environmental risks. He warned that climate change and extreme weather increasingly threaten ports and sea routes.

Highlighting that over 80% of global trade is transported by sea, he stated that maritime security is fundamental to political and economic stability, sustainable development, and the well-being of people worldwide.

He outlined six key priorities: improving maritime domain awareness through technology, combating illegal shipping practices, enhancing capacity building, reinforcing legal frameworks, addressing environmental threats, and protecting seafarers.

Calling Greece a maritime nation with the world’s largest merchant fleet, Mitsotakis pledged continued leadership in safeguarding freedom of navigation alongside UN member states.

He was joined in New York by his wife Mareva Grabowski Mitsotaki, his son Konstantinos, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, and Greece’s UN Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris. He is also expected to meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
