In his weekly social media update, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a series of government initiatives spanning economic support, public safety, and environmental preparedness, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian

Mitsotakis highlighted increased state revenues due to Greece’s strong economic performance, pledging to return one month’s rent annually to tenants starting this November. Additionally, 1.5 million low-income pensioners and vulnerable groups will receive a €250 annual benefit. The Public Investments Program will also receive an annual boost of €500 million to fund infrastructure and job creation.

The PM emphasized the activation of an EU defense spending clause — initiated by Greece — which, if approved, will exempt defense costs from primary surplus targets, freeing up €500 million by 2026 for broader social spending.

Support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) includes €50 million in energy bill subsidies for those affected by high electricity costs from December 2024 to February 2025. However, companies engaged in electricity theft will be excluded.

On train safety, Mitsotakis announced major upgrades including a new real-time tracking system, a digital control platform, and the reintroduction of train supervisors. An online portal, railway.gov.gr, will provide real-time schedule updates.

Other initiatives include expansion of the preventative health program Prolamvano, new maritime spatial planning boosting Greece’s diplomatic leverage in the EU, and intensified preparations for the 2025 fire season, with more firefighting personnel and aircraft. Citizens are urged to clear flammable debris from their land by June 15 in light of worsening climate conditions.
