Turkey Calls for Stronger EU Cooperation on Security and Defense

Politics

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has emphasized the importance of closer cooperation between Turkey and Europe on security matters, stating that joint efforts would benefit both sides, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

Speaking at an online EU meeting, Erdogan highlighted Turkey’s contributions to Ukraine through its defense industry and private sector, despite ongoing war conditions. He criticized Turkey’s exclusion from EU defense procurement and reconstruction programs, calling for a more inclusive approach.

“European security is not just an issue for EU members; it concerns all European allies,” Erdogan said, stressing that challenges in the region highlight the critical nature of Turkey-EU relations for economic and defense stability.

Reaffirming Turkey’s commitment to its EU membership bid, Erdogan urged the bloc to adopt a strategic approach to revitalizing negotiations. He also called for Turkey’s inclusion in mechanisms like the European Peace Facility, which supports Ukraine’s reconstruction.

On the Russia-Ukraine war, Erdogan advocated for a strong diplomatic foundation to achieve a fair and lasting peace. He reaffirmed Turkey’s support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and expressed readiness to mediate in the peace process.

Ankara remains committed to contributing to Europe’s security and defense, Erdogan concluded, urging high-level meetings to advance cooperation between Turkey and the EU.
