Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Janković has sent a letter of support to besieged Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, lauding him for his achievements at a challenging time for Serbia, CE Report quotes STA.

"In these demanding moments when Serbia faces many challenges, I wish to express my sincere support and recognition for everything you have done for the development and stability of the country," says the letter circulated by Vučić's press service.

Janković, who considers Vučić a personal friend, adds that the Serbian president's "leadership, determination and vision have been instrumental to Serbia's success and I am convinced this path must continue," Serbian press agency Tanjug reports.

The letter comes at a time of massive anti-corruption and anti-government protests in Serbia led by students that were triggered by a train station canopy collapse in Novi Sad that killed 15 people.

Janković's office has confirmed for the STA that the mayor sent the letter but would not comment any further, saying that he had already said everything at his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

At the press conference, Janković described Vučić as "a good friend" and said he found it difficult to understand the current situation in Serbia. He argued that the people of Serbia do not realise what a good president Vučić is.
