President Maia Sandu Announces Measures to Address Energy Crisis

Politics

The Supreme Security Council (CSS) of Moldova convened today to discuss the ongoing energy crisis and explore solutions to support residents on both sides of the Dniester River. Following the meeting, President Maia Sandu highlighted the government's initiatives and the challenges posed by the situation, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

Government Efforts to Support the Left Bank

President Sandu revealed that Moldova’s authorities had reached out to Tiraspol as early as November 2024 to discuss solutions to mitigate the crisis. However, all proposals, including offers to purchase gas for the left bank and transfer critically ill patients to hospitals on the right bank, were declined. She criticized the actions of the Tiraspol regime, describing them as conditioned and irrelevant under the circumstances.

“The humanitarian crisis on the left bank, driven by the Kremlin, aims to provoke a political crisis on the right bank and worsen the situation,” Sandu stated, emphasizing the destabilizing role of external pressures.

Solutions and Future Plans

The CSS outlined several measures to address the crisis, including:

  • Accelerating the completion of high-tension power lines between Chisinau and Vulcanesti by the end of 2025.
  • Increasing investments in renewable energy to enhance energy independence.
  • Expanding financial support for citizens and businesses, such as energy vouchers and partial compensations for energy costs, with a focus on helping vulnerable households and maintaining economic competitiveness.

Over 600,000 households are set to receive assistance, with the government urging citizens to conserve energy during this challenging period.

President Sandu reaffirmed the need for unity, resilience, and solidarity, citing past challenges Moldova has overcome, such as trade blockades and energy blackmail.

“Our strength lies in staying united and wise as we navigate these crises together,” she concluded.
