Polish President Andrzej Duda expressed his condolences on X Wednesday night, saying he joins "in pain and prayer with the victim's loved ones and the entire university community," and wished a swift recovery for the injured security guard, CE Report quotes PAP

Other top officials, including Justice Minister Adam Bodnar, Education Minister Barbara Nowacka, and Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, also offered sympathies.

The University of Warsaw declared Thursday a day of mourning and cancelled classes to honor the victim.

The attack took place around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday at the university’s main campus on Krakowskie Przedmiescie Street. A receptionist in her fifties was fatally assaulted inside the Auditorium Maximum building. A security guard who intervened was critically injured.

Authorities confirmed that a 22-year-old Polish law student was arrested at the scene. The motive remains unknown, though the attacker reportedly used a hatchet or axe.
