Pink October in Albania: Raising awareness for breast cancer
Pink October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, aimed at increasing attention to early diagnosis and timely treatment of this disease.
Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama shared today on social media the messages of three sports champions—from athletics, weightlifting, and boxing—while reiterating the ongoing call to get a free mammogram, CE Report quotes ATA.
Athlete Luiza Gega, European Champion in Athletics, said:
"Pink October is a reminder for all of us that health is the most important race we can win."
"I am used to always chasing goals, but no victory makes sense without self-care. Breast screening is not fear, it is strength, a small step that can save lives. Make it part of your routine—take care of yourself, run for life," Gega added.
Enkileda Carja, European Champion in Weightlifting, joined the appeal to all women and girls to undergo free mammograms during Pink October, adding:
"In weightlifting, we learn every day how to lift more, but there is a weight we must share—the responsibility for our health."
"Pink October reminds me that strength is not just physical; it’s the courage to face fear, to not neglect your health, to care for the body that keeps you standing every day. Do it for yourself, for those who love you, for life. A small check today can save you from a heavy burden tomorrow," Carja stated.
"October is the month to remember that strength is measured not only in the ring but by the courage to face ourselves. As a boxer, I fight every day to be strong mentally and physically. But the most important duty is toward our health," said Esmeralda Novruzaj, Bronze Medal winner.
She added:
"Breast cancer does not choose age, profession, or lifestyle, so regular checkups are a round each of us must win."
The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has extended its awareness campaign not only throughout October but year-round, through stationary or mobile mammography units in various cities across the country.
Additionally, through the “e-Albania” portal, every woman or girl can schedule a mammogram in advance, choosing the time and location that suits her.
