Greece records historic reduction in traffic deaths, says European Commission's report
Greece has achieved the second largest reduction of deaths by traffic accidents in 2025 (22%), according to the European Commission's report on road safety.
The European average dropped by 3%, with Greece following Estonia in reduction of fatalities. Greece also registered the greatest drop of traffic fatalities in its history in 2025, from 665 deaths in 2024 to 517 deaths in 2025.
Several ministries and the Hellenic Police, as well as a stricter Road Traffic Code, contributed to the change, among others, CE Report quotes ANA-MPA.
Infrastructure & Transport Minister of Greece Christos Dimas commented that the ministry is at the forefront of the effort to improve traffic safety, and noted that improvements in infrastructure also helped, like the new highway between Patras and Pyrgos.
"The Commission's report proves that all our actions have measurable results. The European Commission data is encouraging and confirms that we are moving in the right direction. However, the number of victims remains high and does not allow for any complacency. We are continuing our efforts consistently and more intensely, with the aim of further reducing traffic accidents and of protecting human lives," he noted.
