Local Traditions Recall Miracles Linked to the Saint
Orthodox Christians celebrated Saint Cosmas Day yesterday, honoring one of the most venerated saints in Albania, to whom numerous churches and monasteries across the country are dedicated, CE Report quotes ATA.
A pilgrimage ceremony was held at the historic Church of the Monastery of Saint Spyridon in Vuno, Himara. The festive Divine Liturgy was conducted by His Grace, Metropolitan Nikolla of Apollonia and Fier, who also serves as Acting Metropolitan of the Holy Metropolis of Gjirokastra. He was joined by Father Evthim Bixhili, caretaker of the holy church, along with local priests Father Joan Merkuri and Father Harallamb Gjoka.
In a statement from the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, it was noted that faithful from Vuno and nearby areas gathered to honor the saint, whose teachings remain deeply rooted in the memory of the elders and are passed down to younger generations.
Himara Mayor Vangjel Tavo also took part in the pilgrimage.
The Church emphasized that the presence of high-ranking clergy and local officials, united in prayer, served as a strong reminder of the region’s Orthodox identity, centuries-old history, and unwavering faith.
In his sermon, Metropolitan Nikolla spoke extensively about Saint Cosmas’ life and teachings, highlighting his connection to the people, their faith, and local education. He also mentioned remarkable local traditions associated with the saint — including the miracle of the timber that washed ashore for the church roof and the prophecy about the cypress tree that miraculously grew atop the stone bell tower.
The Church of Saint Spyridon, built in 1778, is itself a symbol of faith. According to tradition, Saint Cosmas encouraged locals to build the church using available stones, promising that God would provide the timber. Miraculously, a shipwreck brought the necessary wood to shore, allowing the construction to be completed.
