Director Quentin Tarantino has finally revealed why he decided to scrap The Movie Critic as his 10th and final film, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

“No one is waiting for this thing, really. I mean, I can do it whenever I want. It’s already written. So, okay, let’s not start it now. Let me try writing it as a movie and see if it’s better that way. And I said, ‘Oh, okay, I think this will be the movie.’ And then it didn’t happen. I pulled the plug. And the reason I stopped it is kind of crazy,” the 62-year-old director said on The Church of Tarantino podcast.

The Movie Critic, which the Pulp Fiction director announced in March 2023, began as an eight-part series before he reworked the script into a feature film. However, in April 2024, it was revealed that the Kill Bill director had abandoned the film for another project.

“But there was a challenge I set for myself when I made it: can I take the most boring profession in the world and make an interesting movie? Every Tarantino title promises a lot—except The Movie Critic,” he explained.

“Who wants to watch a TV series about a damn film critic? Who wants to see a movie called The Movie Critic? If I can make a film or TV series about someone watching movies interesting—that’s an achievement.”

Tarantino also dismissed rumors that The Movie Critic was a direct sequel to his 2019 film Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.

“It’s a spiritual follow-up to Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood in that they both take place in the same world and the same city. But there were no overlapping characters. Cliff Booth was never in The Movie Critic. That’s all nonsense. It was never that.”

Before dropping the idea for another mysterious project last year, Tarantino revealed that The Movie Critic was set in 1977 California and “based on a guy who really lived, but was never truly famous.”

Unlike his eight previous films, and despite not being a direct sequel, Tarantino admitted that The Movie Critic would have been very similar to Once Upon a Time…

Tarantino ended the podcast by insisting that he’s not concerned about releasing his 10th and supposedly final film, and fans shouldn’t worry either, reports KosovaPress.
