Italian agri-food sector adds two new PGI products
“Taggiasca Olives from Liguria and Carne Salada from Trentino have obtained Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) recognition, once again proving that quality, tradition, and a strong connection to the land are the true competitive strengths of Italian agriculture,” said Francesco Lollobrigida, Italy’s Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests.
The Minister celebrated the addition of these two products to the European register of Protected Geographical Indications, CE Report quotes ANSA.
“My commitment, and that of MASAF (Ministry of Agriculture), is to ensure new growth and market opportunities for these excellences. The system of geographical indications is the right path to protect our products and share value across the supply chain,” Lollobrigida added.
With the registration of “Olive Taggiasche liguri” and “Carne salada del Trentino”, Italy now counts 895 PGI recognitions, confirming its leadership in Europe. The Geographical Indication system is worth €20.3 billion in production, and Italian GI products generate €11.6 billion in exports.
