
Pomorie Seeks UNESCO Status
Pomorie Mayor Ivan Aleksiev announced on Saturday that the town is determined to become a top tourist and spa hub on Bulgaria’s Southern Black Sea coast. Speaking at the Brand Pomorie: Spa Capital of the Southern Black Sea Coast forum, Aleksiev said the municipality is working to resolve ownership issues surrounding the ancient Thracian beehive tomb, a cultural heritage site since 1978, CE Report quotes BTA
The town’s vision is to develop the tomb into a major tourist attraction and apply for its inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Talks with the Ministry of Agriculture about transferring management rights to the municipality are scheduled for Monday.
Aleksiev emphasized the need to diversify tourism beyond beaches and sunshine, highlighting the demand for authentic historical experiences. Efforts to raise tourism quality, protect the environment, and promote local culture were discussed during the event. Pomorie's beaches have also received the prestigious Blue Flag Award for environmental excellence.
Aleksiev concluded, "If we work together—state, municipalities, media, and the tourism sector—Bulgaria can become a global tourist destination."
