Ukraine seeks Vatican help to free citizens from Russian captivity

During a meeting with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, and Deputy Head of the Office of the President, Iryna Vereshchuk, delivered a letter from President Volodymyr Zelensky to Pope Leo XIV, requesting the facilitation of the release of Ukrainians captured and deported by Russia.

Vereshchuk reported this on Telegram, CE Report quotes Ukrinform.

“I delivered a letter from President Volodymyr Zelensky to Pope Leo XIV with a request to intensify the Vatican's efforts to release Ukrainians from Russian captivity and return illegally deported Ukrainian children,” Vereshchuk said.

According to her, the Ukrainian side will coordinate cooperation with the Holy See through Andriy Yermak, the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.

“We believe that the Vatican can become one of the key international platforms for consolidating humanitarian efforts in support of Ukrainians,” Vereshchuk emphasized.

As reported, during the event "Children of Ukraine: The Future During and After the War," Vereshchuk emphasized that the survival of Ukrainians as a nation in the future depends on the current state policy regarding child protection.
