Ancient Cave Museum Opens in Moldova
A new museum complex has opened in Duruitoarea Veche, one of the oldest human-inhabited sites in Moldova, located in the Rascani district. The site includes a prehistoric cave, inhabited over 20,000 years ago, where archaeologists discovered stone tools, bones, and fire pits, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES
The area’s dramatic limestone gorge, steep cliffs, and the serene Duruitoarea river provide a picturesque setting. Nearby attractions include a traditional wooden church, the ethnographic Village Museum in Costesti, the Costesti-Stanca Dam, and the Duruitoarea Veche Landscape Reserve, popular for hiking and birdwatching.
The newly inaugurated museum aims to preserve the cultural heritage and boost local tourism. It features artifacts from the Paleolithic cave and historic items donated by residents. The project, launched with help from the “Moștenitorii” NGO, received nearly €20,000 in funding.
Locals hope the site, internationally recognized for its archaeological significance, will become a key destination for tourists and support traditional crafts and local businesses.
