PSG crowned European Super Cup champions in Salzburg

French football club PSG are the winners of this year’s European Super Cup after beating English side Aston Villa 2–1 (1–1) in Salzburg.

PSG’s goals were scored by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (20th minute) and Désiré Doué (61st), while Brian Madjo (45th) scored for Aston Villa, CE Report quotes STA.

The match between this year’s Champions League winners from Paris and the Europa League winners from Birmingham ended in favour of the French capital side in the city of Mozart. By winning the traditional curtain-raiser to the European season, PSG matched the achievement of Real Madrid, who won the trophy in consecutive years in 2016 and 2017, and AC Milan, who triumphed in 1989 and 1990.

Real Madrid have won the European Super Cup a record six times. Barcelona and Milan have each won it five times, Liverpool four times, Atlético Madrid three times, while Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Ajax, Anderlecht, Valencia, Juventus and PSG have each lifted the trophy twice.

The match in Salzburg was refereed by Somalia’s Omar Artan. Named Africa’s best referee in 2025, he was expected to be part of the officiating team at this year’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but US authorities denied him entry to the country.

Following the decision, UEFA immediately appointed Artan as the referee for the match in Salzburg. He was assisted by Liban Abdoulrazack Ahmed of Djibouti and Stephen Eleazar Onyango Yiembe of Kenya, while Slovenia’s Rade Obrenović served as the fourth official.
