Sofia to host Bulgaria’s Euro 2026 Volleyball group matches
On Tuesday, the management board of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation (BVF) announced during an ad hoc meeting that Sofia will host the Bulgarian national team's matches in the group stage of next year's European Men's Volleyball Championship, CE Report quotes BTA.
The national team, which became world vice-champions just over two weeks ago, are set to play the Republic of North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Ukraine and Israel in Group B of Euro 2026. Sofia is also set to host two matches in the round of 16 and one quarter-final of the European Championship. The Sofia City Council has allocated BGN 500,000 for hosting expenses.
"The silver medals, the inspiration that the players provided and the excitement among thousands of children and fans across the country, have created a new necessity: to give as many spectators as possible access to the national team's matches. The Arena Sofia Hall, with a capacity of over 12,000, will provide this opportunity and allow even more families and fans to experience the excitement live," the BVF wrote on their website.
Initially, the coastal city of Varna was due to host the Bulgarian national team's matches during the European Championship, which is scheduled to take place from September 10 to 27, 2026. The other host countries for the championship are Italy, Romania and Finland.
