First country in Arab world abolishes death penalty

Politics

The Lebanese parliament has abolished the death penalty, making Lebanon the first country in the Arab world to replace it with life imprisonment with hard labour.

Lebanon has observed an unofficial moratorium on executions since January 2004, CE Report quotes ANSA.

Since then, dozens of death sentences have nevertheless been handed down, but they were subsequently suspended or commuted. A majority of the 128 members of parliament voted in favour of abolishing the death penalty, with the exception of Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc.
