Kim Jong Un re-elected as North Korea’s top party leader

Politics

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been re-elected, without surprise, as General Secretary of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea during an extraordinary congress, the state news agency KCNA reported on Monday, cited by AFP.

The decision was taken “in accordance with the unshakable will and unanimous desire of all delegates” attending the congress, according to KCNA, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

The congress, which is normally held every five years, is the party’s most important gathering — a major political event that traditionally consolidates the regime’s authority and may serve as a platform to announce policy changes or leadership reshuffles.

Since the previous congress in 2021, North Korea has continued to expand its nuclear arsenal and has carried out multiple intercontinental ballistic missile tests, violating bans imposed by the United Nations Security Council.

North Korea remains subject to several rounds of sanctions over its nuclear weapons programs. For years, the country’s economy has been struggling, and food shortages remain chronic.
