Ex-President Yoon Faces Arrest in Ongoing Coup Investigation

Politics

South Korea’s special prosecutor today arrested former president Yoon Suk-yeol on charges of obstruction of official duties and other allegations related to his brief imposition of martial law on December 3, CE Report quotes ANSA.

Yoon, who was initially arrested and indicted in January for leading an insurrection, was released in March and officially removed from office in early April following the Constitutional Court’s approval of the impeachment process.

After President Lee Jae-myung took office in early June, special prosecutors were appointed to conduct an independent investigation separate from the government, in an effort to reconstruct the events of December.

On Sunday, the prosecution requested an arrest warrant for Yoon, claiming he had ordered presidential security services to block his detention back in January, resisting several police attempts. A Seoul court this morning issued the arrest warrant following Yoon’s interrogation, citing the risk of evidence tampering.

The former national chief prosecutor, who later turned politician, has denied the charges, accusing the investigation of being politically motivated and false.

South Korean media also reported that in October, Yoon allegedly ordered the country’s military to send drones into North Korea—part of a plan to provoke a foreign attack and justify the imposition of martial law.
