Greece Tightens Traffic Laws
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, announced stricter road safety measures, citing the country's high rate of fatal traffic accidents in Europe. Highlighting his personal concern as a father and citizen, Mitsotakis condemned the frequency of drunk-driving incidents and called for a collective sense of responsibility, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian
The new Road Traffic Code, discussed under a bill from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, introduces harsher penalties for serious offenses like speeding, drink-driving, and mobile phone use. Repeat offenders will face multiplied fines and loss of their driving licenses. Mandatory breathalyser checks will replace random testing, as one in four road deaths is linked to alcohol.
Mitsotakis emphasized that legislation alone isn’t enough. He called for improved road infrastructure, better traffic education in schools, and stronger public transport systems. “Only if people trust public transport will they leave their cars behind,” he noted, thanking opposition parties for their constructive stance.
