Mitsotakis on Monastery, Reforms, Investments
In his weekly government update, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed several key issues, including Greece’s support for the historic Monastery of Saint Catherine at Mount Sinai. Following a ruling by Egypt’s Court of Appeal of Ismailia, Mitsotakis reaffirmed the Greek government's alignment with the monastery’s position, emphasizing the need to respect its long-standing traditions and status. He noted that the Egyptian government, including President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, has assured the monastery’s continued operation, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian
Mitsotakis also reviewed domestic reforms, highlighting stricter measures against sports-related violence introduced 15 months ago, including mandatory stadium cameras and fan ID controls, which he said have proven effective.
On education, the prime minister condemned violence in universities and reported that 48 illegal occupations had been cleared, with over 500 arrests. He also announced upcoming renovations in 426 schools across 245 municipalities under the “Marietta Giannakou” program.
Addressing civil service reform, Mitsotakis defended employee evaluations as a tool for improvement, not punishment.
He welcomed the European Commission’s latest report, noting strong economic performance, including high primary surpluses and growth double the eurozone average.
Finally, he outlined four new strategic investments worth €780 million in energy, broadband, innovation, and tourism, aiming to boost sustainable growth and create well-paid jobs. Over €1 billion will be allocated to businesses through the new development law over the next two years.
