Moldova PM Warns of Russian Plot
Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean has warned that Russia is attempting to install a pro-Kremlin government in Moldova ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections on September 28. In an interview with the Financial Times, Recean said Moscow aims to use the breakaway Transnistrian region in its war against Ukraine and to expand its military presence there, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES
“This is a huge effort to undermine democracy in Moldova,” he stated, emphasizing that the government remains focused on joining the European Union.
Recean revealed that in 2024 alone, Russia spent the equivalent of 1% of Moldova’s GDP on influence operations, including propaganda and illicit funding of parties and voters. “Their propaganda and communication mechanisms are very strong,” he said, warning of continued interference.
Despite these threats, Recean expressed confidence in Moldova’s democratic path if citizens remain engaged. His remarks came during a visit to Brussels for the ninth Moldova-EU Association Council meeting on June 3–4.
