Greece and Serbia Strengthen Ties, Advocate for Serbia's EU Accession

Greece has declared Serbia's accession to the European Union a "geopolitical necessity," according to Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis after his meeting with Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić in Athens. Highlighting the historical, cultural, and strategic ties between the two nations, Gerapetritis reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to supporting Serbia’s European ambitions and fostering deeper bilateral cooperation, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian

During their meeting, the ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance collaboration. They also discussed key projects in transport and energy, including railway connections and natural gas pipelines, which are vital for regional energy independence. The EU-Western Balkans Summit in Brussels underscored Greece’s steadfast support for Serbia's European trajectory.

Gerapetritis addressed Kosovo, maintaining Greece's support for dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina and welcoming a recent agreement on missing persons. The ministers emphasized record trade levels, expanding tourism, and investment opportunities, with 2024 showing significant growth.

On international matters, Gerapetritis reiterated Greece’s commitment to international law, peaceful dispute resolution, and multilateral diplomacy. As a UN Security Council member starting January 2025, Greece aims to deepen cooperation with Serbia.

Đurić expressed gratitude for Greece's support and underscored Serbia’s respect for Greece’s territorial integrity. He highlighted Serbia’s 4% economic growth, inviting Greek investment and promoting mutual tourism. Đurić emphasized that collaboration between the nations is key to regional stability and prosperity.

The ministers concluded with a shared vision for stronger bilateral ties and a unified approach to regional and international challenges.
