At the UN Security Council’s Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security, UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous stressed that women’s participation is not a secondary element of the peace process, but a prerequisite for sustainable peace.

On its part, Greece emphasised that sustainable peace and security cannot be achieved without the full, equal, meaningful and safe participation of women in decision-making and peacebuilding efforts, CE Report quotes ANA-MPA.

Greece’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Aglaia Balta, reiterated the UN Secretary-General’s call for women to comprise at least 30% of participants in peace processes.

She underlined that gender equality provisions should be incorporated into all peace agreements and ceasefire frameworks.

Balta also called for the protection of women leaders from reprisals, threats and intimidation.

Furthermore, she noted that Greece’s National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security provides an essential framework for translating the objectives of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda into practical and measurable commitments.
