Skopje launches major cleanup campaign

North Macedonia

After several difficult weeks in which Skopje was overwhelmed with garbage due to blockades and neglect, the Mayor of Čair, Izet Mexhiti, together with Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski, went out this evening to personally help restore cleanliness in every neighborhood and on every street of the capital, according to a statement from the Municipality of Čair.

Citizens can finally breathe freely again, as the cleanup of Skopje has begun, CE Report quotes MIA.

"Together with Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, the Mayor of Skopje Orce Gjorgjievski, tonight we are on the ground alongside teams from the Public Utility Company for Communal Hygiene, Parks and Greenery, other city enterprises, and socially responsible companies leading this major civic mobilization effort. We will be cleaning the containers, the areas around them, pedestrian zones, squares, and mini-dumps that were created as a result of the blockades and irresponsibility that left Skopje covered in waste," Mexhiti said.

He added that tonight Skopje will not sleep on garbage, but will wake up tomorrow with cleaner streets, fresher air, and a new look.

"This is the beginning of a new chapter for Skopje — a city that we are taking into our own hands to clean, organize, and make a source of pride once again for all its citizens," Mexhiti concluded.
