The construction of a key branch of the Bulgarian natural gas distribution network within the Vertical Corridor was officially launched in Kresna on Thursday. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, Greek Environment & Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou, and Bulgarian Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov led the ceremony, joined by Hungarian Foreign Affairs Minister Péter Szijjártó, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian

The project connects Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova, and Ukraine, aiming to strengthen energy security and diversify supply sources in the region. The pipeline will transport increasing volumes of natural gas from Greece northwards, and is expected to be operational by early 2026.

“This corridor highlights Greece’s leading role in Europe’s energy autonomy and security,” Papastavrou said, noting its significant geostrategic importance.
