Netflix series Adolescence earns multiple Golden Globes
Irish star Jessie Buckley won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Drama, while Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, and Erin Doherty continued the winning streak for Adolescence at the awards season highlighted by the Golden Globes, Reuters reports Monday.
Jessie Buckley received the Golden Globe for her role as William Shakespeare’s wife, Agnes Hathaway—historically known as Anne—in the film adaptation of Hamnet, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.
"This is not a normal feeling or a usual situation," she said upon accepting the award.
The film, based on Maggie O’Farrell’s book about the death of Shakespeare’s son, which inspired him to write Hamlet, won Best Dramatic Film, while the production One Battle After Another took the Golden Globe for Best Comedy/Musical Film.
Stephen Graham won Best Actor in a Television Miniseries, Owen Cooper won Best Supporting Actor, and Erin Doherty won Best Supporting Actress.
The Netflix series, about a teenager arrested for allegedly killing a classmate, also won the award for Best Limited Series, Anthology, or Television Film.
"Some say our series is about fearing young people. It’s not. It’s about the misery and trash we left in their way," said the show’s co-creator, Jack Thorne.
After thanking the young actors in the cast, he added, "You are proof that the world can be better."
"Giving up hatred is our generation’s responsibility. It requires top-down thinking. The possibility seems distant now, but hope is a beautiful thing," he added.
Adolescence had previously won four awards in the same categories at last week’s Critics’ Choice Awards and has also won multiple Emmys.
Stephen Graham appeared to read notes from his hand as he took the stage to accept his award. "I just want to congratulate everyone nominated in this category." He also thanked his wife, producer Hannah Walters, saying, "I’ve said it before, but you’ve saved my life (…) And to my wonderful children, Grace and Alfie, I love you to the Moon and back, forever."
"I dedicate this award to my father, my hero, and also to my mother and all my friends and family—you all know who you are, because without you, none of this would be possible," he added.
Owen Cooper referenced his favorite football team, Liverpool, upon receiving his award. "Being here on the Golden Globes stage is unreal. My family and I have been on an incredible journey."
"At first, I thought I’d manage, but then I realized I was no good and risked attending acting classes. I was the only boy there, it was awkward, but I managed. But I still feel like an apprentice, still learning every day (…) from the people in front of me, those who inspire me. I wouldn’t be here without you," he added.
"Here’s to 2026. You’ll never walk alone," he concluded, referencing the famous Liverpool anthem.
Stellan Skarsgård won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his role as an aging film director in Sentimental Value, while Rose Byrne won Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.
Narcos star Wagner Moura won Best Actor in a Drama for The Secret Agent. The Brazilian actor said, "The Secret Agent is a film about memory, about the lack of memory and generational trauma. I believe if trauma can pass from one generation to the next, so can values. This award is for those who hold onto their values in difficult times."
