Denzel: “Public Support Doesn’t Matter to Me”
Actor Denzel Washington has made it clear that he wants nothing to do with cancel culture, saying he doesn’t care much about public support or followers, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
In a heated discussion on the Complex podcast, the acclaimed actor was quick to question the very idea of “canceling.”
“Who cares? What made public support so important in the first place? I don’t care who’s following who,” Washington said, adding that the idea of followers or public support in general doesn’t matter to him, according to KosovaPress.
“You can't lead and follow at the same time, and you can't follow and lead at the same time. I don’t follow anyone. I follow God, not man. I have faith in God. I have hope in humanity, but look around — it’s not working out so well. You can’t be canceled.”
Earlier this year, the Oscar winner continued to hold strong influence in Hollywood. He received his 11th Golden Globe nomination for the upcoming “Gladiator 2”, setting a new record as the most-nominated Black actor in the history of the awards.
The Training Day star had previously worried fans with retirement rumors.
“I didn’t say I was retiring. I’m more interested in being behind the camera. I might have used the word ‘retirement,’ but I see life in three parts: learn, earn, return. I’m in the return phase of life.”
