Romanian Films Make Historic Mark at Locarno 2025

Culture

Romania will mark a historic milestone at the 78th Locarno International Film Festival (August 6–16, 2025) with the selection of three films in official competitions — the country's largest presence ever at the Swiss festival, CE Report quotes AGERPRES

Radu Jude's Dracula, a bold and genre-blending take on the vampire myth, competes in the main section, Concorso Internazionale. Jude described it as “everything for everyone,” combining satire, politics, horror, and comedy.

In the Cineasti del Presente section, debut director Andrei Epure presents Don't Let Me Die, a poetic and darkly humorous meditation on grief, starring Cosmina Stratan.

Also competing is Sorella di Clausura by Ivana Mladenovic, an empathetic parody of romantic melodrama rooted in real events and set during the 2008 Balkan economic crisis.

Supported by the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR), these entries highlight the growing global recognition of Romanian cinema.
