Croatia’s gross external debt reaches 73.4% of GDP

Croatia’s current and capital account balance deficit narrowed to EUR 1.25 billion in the second quarter of 2026, compared with EUR 1.45 billion recorded in the same period a year earlier, according to the latest data published by the Croatian National Bank (HNB).

The HNB said the balance of payments data for the second quarter of 2026 showed that the deficit decreased by EUR 195.5 million year-on-year.

The improvement was primarily driven by the primary income and capital account sub-items, whose balances improved by EUR 158.8 million and EUR 183.3 million, respectively, compared with the same quarter of the previous year.

At the same time, the negative balance of trade in goods widened by EUR 211.6 million, while the positive balance of the services account increased by EUR 50.6 million. The positive balance of secondary income also increased, by EUR 14.4 million.

The financial account of Croatia’s balance of payments recorded a balance of EUR -1.28 billion in the second quarter of 2026, compared with EUR -0.86 billion in the same quarter of 2025.

The country’s net international investment position stood at EUR -35.1 billion at the end of June 2026. Compared with the end of the second quarter of 2025, the negative balance narrowed by EUR 0.74 billion, while its ratio to GDP improved from -40.5% to -36.5%.

Meanwhile, Croatia’s gross external debt amounted to EUR 70.7 billion at the end of the second quarter of 2026, equivalent to 73.4% of GDP.

The HNB noted that its statistical releases provide an overview of the latest published values and trends in key statistical indicators covering Croatia’s external sector.
