Greece moves to abolish widow's pension cuts introduced under 2016 law

Legislation abolishing reductions to survivors' pensions after the three-year period for pensioners covered by Law 4387/2016 has been submitted to the Greek Parliament.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of Greece, the measure aims to address distortions caused by the law by ending cuts to main survivors' pensions after three years, CE Report informs via the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of Greece's official website.

It recognises the independence of pension rights and removes financial burdens imposed under the previous system.

"We are ending a major social injustice that has lasted for ten years and affected thousands of families. We are introducing a new, fair and socially sensitive framework, correcting the distortions created by the Tsipras-Katrougalos law. Thousands of survivors' pension beneficiaries will be freed from a system of uncertainty and prolonged hardship," Labour and Social Security Minister Niki Kerameus said.

The move represents a notable shift in policy regarding survivors' pensions. The government contends that it reinstates fairness for beneficiaries who previously endured reductions following the initial three-year entitlement period.
