Easter in Italy has stopped being just a matter of faith and has become a complex exercise in mathematics.

This year, traditional chocolate eggs and the iconic “Colomba” cake have appeared in shop windows in Rome with an unexpected ingredient: “shrinkflation” — a commercial strategy in which producers reduce the quantity or weight of a product while keeping the same price, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

According to reports from Italian consumer associations Codacons and Udicon, the price of industrial chocolate has now exceeded €77 per kilogram, marking an increase of up to 10% compared to last year.

However, the greatest frustration is not only about cost, but also size: 46% of consumers say the eggs are now noticeably smaller.

Tradition vs inflation

Despite rising chocolate prices, tradition in Italy remains strong.

“I’m not religious, but for my family, Easter has always been a time to be together, to cook and eat eggs that are always present after lunch,” said Carola, a young woman from Milan living in Rome.

She also agrees with the general perception: “Absolutely, Easter eggs have become smaller and prices have gone up.”

“Colomba” vs Panettone

In pastry shops near the Vatican, Alejandra, a Colombian worker, says the emotional aspect outweighs the economic one.

“It’s a gift for the family; it’s very traditional here,” she says while serving “Colomba,” the dove-shaped Easter cake, which — with only a 3% price increase — has become a more affordable option for many.

Although tourists often confuse it with the more famous Christmas panettone, the difference is clear.

“I think the difference is mainly in the shape, because the dough preparation is very similar, except that panettone is given in December,” she explains.

Easter rituals and “Pasquetta”

To understand the resilience of this market — worth over €600 million annually — one must understand Italian Easter traditions.

The egg is not simply eaten, but broken together. This act symbolizes the Resurrection: breaking the tomb to release life, represented by the “surprise” inside the chocolate egg.

This social ritual extends to “Pasquetta” (Easter Monday), a favorite day for young people.

“It’s one of my favorite holidays because every year my friends and I have a barbecue and spend the whole day together,” Carola adds.

However, the current economic situation forces three out of four Italians to change their habits — choosing smaller eggs or avoiding luxury brands to keep this symbol of hope alive.
