Employers Back Euro Adoption
In a public letter addressed to Bulgaria’s top state officials, the Association of Bulgarian Employers' Organizations (ABEO) has voiced strong support for the country’s planned adoption of the euro on January 1, 2026, CE Report quotes BTA
The letter, sent to President Rumen Radev, Parliament Chair Nataliya Kiselova, and Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, emphasizes the economic benefits of eurozone membership and rejects calls for a national referendum on the issue. The employers warn that a referendum would create unnecessary division and hinder Bulgaria’s European integration.
ABEO represents organizations generating over 86% of Bulgaria’s gross value added and employing 82% of its workforce. It reaffirmed Bulgaria’s longstanding commitment to EU membership and the adoption of the euro, as outlined in its 2007 Accession Treaty.
The move comes amid political debate over President Radev’s proposal for a 2026 referendum on euro adoption. Government leaders and parliamentary parties have largely dismissed the proposal as unconstitutional or counterproductive.
Bulgaria is expecting key readiness reports from the European Central Bank and the European Commission in June 2025 ahead of its planned eurozone accession.
