Bulgaria to Allocate 2.09% of GDP to Defence in 2025
Bulgaria's Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov announced that defence spending for 2025 will reach 2.09% of GDP. Speaking at the Chief of Defence Annual Conference, he noted that with compensation funds included, the budget would exceed this percentage. The government aims to raise defence spending to 2.5% of GDP in the coming years, CE Report quotes BTA
Zapryanov highlighted the need to align Bulgaria’s military capabilities with NATO’s expanded targets, as outlined in the government’s strategic review. However, a proposal for compulsory military training for certain employees was excluded from the governance programme due to opposition from a coalition party and resistance from the Ministry of Interior.
The minister praised the transparency of the Armed Forces’ readiness assessment and confirmed that a progress report on defence investments will be submitted to Parliament. He also emphasized the urgent need for personnel recruitment, prioritizing key military units.
