OpenAI CEO says AI benefits must be weighed against risks
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the benefits of artificial intelligence should be accepted despite some of the risks the technology may bring, noting that his company and rival Anthropic have different approaches to AI regulation.
Speaking to Politico, Altman described his disagreement with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei by saying:
“We believe the world needs to accept that some bad things will happen in order to realize the benefits of this technology and allow people to make their own decisions.”
Altman argued that some risks posed by AI must be accepted in order to achieve the technology’s potential benefits, emphasizing that OpenAI and Anthropic take different approaches to AI regulation, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
He said he does not support an approach aimed at completely eliminating risks such as the misuse of AI, fraud and cyberattacks. Altman said he believes people will use the technology to do “far more good than bad,” and that the benefits will greatly outweigh the harmful uses.
At the same time, Altman stressed that he does not accept “truly catastrophic risks,” such as completely losing control over artificial intelligence.
In a statement to Politico, Anthropic said its regulatory proposals apply only to “frontier” AI models.
