Michael Jordan's NBA Finals jersey sets new auction record

Sports

Michael Jordan remains one of the greatest athletes long after retiring from basketball.

His jerseys continue to attract strong interest at auctions, and a new record has now been set: €12.55 million for a Chicago Bulls No. 23 jersey worn in Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals, CE Report quotes STA.

According to auction house Hunt, a Florida-based real estate investor paid $14 million for the red Chicago Bulls jersey bearing the legendary No. 23. Michael Jordan wore the jersey in Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz, scoring 37 points to lead the Bulls to a 93–88 victory.

The win prevented Chicago from losing both opening games of the Finals at home. After a fiercely contested series, Jordan’s team ultimately prevailed 4–2.

This is the highest price ever paid for a basketball collectible, although it is not the most expensive sports jersey ever sold. That record belongs to a baseball jersey worn by Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees. The jersey, worn during the 1932 World Series, sold for approximately €21.62 million in 2024.

Just last month, another Jordan jersey sold at auction for what was then a record price of approximately €10.8 million. Jordan wore that jersey during Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the Jazz.

The 1997–98 season was Jordan’s final campaign with the Chicago Bulls and the season at the center of the documentary The Last Dance. Between 1991 and 1998, the Bulls won six NBA championships with Jordan on the team. Jerseys worn by the American superstar during that final season are among the most sought-after items for wealthy sports memorabilia collectors.
