Kylian Mbappé scored twice as the France national football team defeated the Sweden national football team 3-0 in the Round of 16, surpassing Lionel Messi's record with 19 FIFA Club World Cup goals and drawing level with him at the top of this tournament's scoring chart with six goals.

The 27-year-old has been chasing Messi's record throughout the competition, but said his primary focus is on lifting the trophy on July 19, rather than finishing as the tournament's top scorer, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

"I think the objective, as I've said, is to go as far as possible, reach July 19 and come back here. We're trying to win and taking it step by step. Of course, the more goals you score, the higher you climb in the standings—that's nothing new. But I'm also convinced Leo will score more goals, so I don't focus too much on that. I'm more focused on the opponents we may face and how close we are to reaching our goal of making the final," Mbappé said.

Messi's Argentina national football team will face Cape Verde national football team in the Round of 16.

France will next play Paraguay national football team for a place in the quarterfinals, where they would face either co-host Canada national football team or Morocco national football team.
