
Poland Ends EU Presidency with Key Gains
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, alongside Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and European Council President Antonio Costa, praised Poland’s achievements as it concludes its six-month EU presidency on June 30, CE Report quotes PAP
At a Brussels press conference, von der Leyen called the presidency “challenging but successful,” highlighting the adoption of 37 legal acts and agreements on 18 more. She also commended the rapid approval of the SAFE defence loan programme in just 71 days.
Tusk welcomed the EU’s decision to extend all current sanctions against Russia for another six months and confirmed ongoing efforts to finalize the 18th sanctions package, targeting Russia’s shadow fleet.
He also noted Poland’s growing influence within NATO, pointing to the recent summit where members pledged to boost defence spending to 5% of GDP—matching Poland’s own target for 2026.
