
EU Urged to Act on Middle East Crisis
The Middle East’s growing instability is a serious concern for the European Union and global security, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said Monday at the EU Foreign Affairs Council, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonia
Citing a recent deadly terrorist attack on the Holy Church of Prophet Elias in Damascus, Gerapetritis warned of rising asymmetrical threats and called for immediate European engagement.
He presented a five-point proposal, emphasizing:
Political solutions through restraint and de-escalation,
Protection of civilians and freedom of navigation,
Strong EU involvement in regional diplomacy,
Unhindered humanitarian aid to Gaza and support for the Palestinian Authority,
Addressing related crises in Syria and Libya, including irregular migration.
Gerapetritis stressed the need for respect for international law, especially maritime law, urging the EU to take a leading role in managing the escalating regional tensions.
