Sandu: Romania Is Moldova’s Key Ally

Politics

President of Moldova Maia Sandu praised Romania on Tuesday as a “firm partner” and a true friend of the Moldovan people during a press conference with Romanian President Nicușor Dan, who was on an official visit to Chișinău, Agerpres

“I am glad that Romania is headed by someone who respects Moldova and stands with us,” Sandu stated, emphasizing the strong bilateral ties and shared values between the two countries.

She noted the significant support shown by Moldovans with Romanian citizenship in Romania's recent presidential elections, where a pro-European candidate prevailed.

Highlighting ongoing regional dangers, Sandu warned of persistent threats from Russia—both military and hybrid. “This is a war not just of weapons, but of disinformation, fear, and manipulation,” she said, adding that the attacks aim to destabilize democracies like Moldova that have chosen the path of freedom.

Sandu stressed that Romania’s support for Ukraine also protects Moldova and Romania, thanking Bucharest for its consistent backing.

“If Moldova were to fall into Russia’s hands, not just Chișinău, but Bucharest, Odessa, and Europe would be at risk,” she cautioned.

On the economic front, Sandu pointed to key joint infrastructure projects, including the nearing completion of the Chișinău–Vulcănești power line. She also announced plans to buy Romanian gas from the Black Sea starting in 2027 and to eventually import electricity from Romania’s future Cernavodă reactors.

Sandu called for improved border logistics and shorter customs wait times, saying, “The Prut River must be a bridge, not an obstacle.”

Finally, she underscored Romania’s essential role in supporting Moldova’s EU aspirations: “Romania speaks for us in Brussels, and we are grateful. Moldova has something to offer—a safer Europe and a stable Black Sea region.”
