Bill Gates warns AI advances too quickly for voluntary regulation

Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has urged the United States to take a leading role in regulating the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, warning that the technology is advancing too quickly for governments to rely solely on voluntary safeguards, CE Report quotes ANSA.

Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Gates said that “nobody thinks self-regulation is enough,” arguing that lawmakers in Washington need to establish clear rules for the development and use of AI.

Gates also cautioned that reaching an international agreement on a global regulatory framework could prove even more difficult than the Cold War-era negotiations aimed at limiting nuclear weapons. The challenge, he suggested, lies in getting countries with different interests and approaches to technology to agree on common rules.

His comments come amid growing international debate over how governments should manage increasingly powerful AI systems while encouraging innovation and addressing potential risks.
