Cristiano Ronaldo abandons plans to retire from international football
Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that he will not retire from international football, following his sudden departure from Portugal’s national team camp.
The 41-year-old Portuguese forward left the squad after being left out of the team for matches against Denmark and Norway. In a 1,740-word statement, Ronaldo accused head coach Jorge Jesus of failing to keep his word, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
Ronaldo apologized to his teammates and Portugal supporters for leaving the national team camp while UEFA Nations League matches were still being played. He revealed that he had been planning to announce his retirement from international football but was persuaded to reconsider the decision by Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.
The veteran forward also said he was prepared to accept any punishment for his decision to leave the camp unexpectedly.
“The federation should assess my actions and punish me accordingly. I believe the punishment should not be reduced. I have already apologized, but I know that actions have consequences,” Ronaldo said.
Ronaldo has made 234 appearances for Portugal and scored 146 goals, making him one of the most prolific international players in football history. He played a key role in Portugal’s victory at the 2016 European Championship, helping the country win its first major international title.
Despite the latest controversy, Ronaldo’s decision means he remains available for Portugal as the team continues its preparations for upcoming international competitions.
