Kosovo risks losing Leon Avdullahu to Switzerland

Kosovo National Team Manager Bajram Shala admitted that there was a real risk that talented midfielder Leon Avdullahu might choose to represent Switzerland instead of Kosovo, highlighting that the negotiations for his engagement were long and sensitive, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

During a press conference held by Kosovo's Head Coach, Franco Foda, Shala was asked by KosovaPress about the process of bringing Avdullahu to the national team.

“The engagement of every player who has played or could potentially play for another national team and then comes to represent Kosovo requires a lot of time and discussions. It's not just about convincing them, but also about showing them the sporting project. Of course, the emotional connection each player has with Kosovo and their desire to wear the jersey plays a decisive role in their decision. In Leon’s case, it was the same. Discussions about bringing him to Kosovo began years ago, since his debut with Basel. He’s potentially a very high-level player, and the interest shown by the Swiss Federation proves his quality and potential to play for Switzerland. So yes, there was always a chance he could choose Switzerland,” said Shala.

Kosovo will play its first two 2026 World Cup qualifying matches—first away against Switzerland on September 5, and then at home in Pristina against Sweden on September 8.
