EU outlines key conditions for Kosovo’s progress on European path

The two key conditions for Kosovo’s progress on the European path are the implementation of reforms and the normalization of relations with Serbia, said the spokesperson of the European Commission responsible for foreign affairs and security policy, neighborhood policy, and enlargement, Julija Matzik.

According to her, the EU wants to lift the measures imposed on Kosovo in 2023 and help the Kosovo authorities continue their path toward EU membership, CE Report quotes MIA.

“In May 2025, the Commission took the first steps toward the gradual lifting of the measures that are in force. As previously stated, our goal is the further removal of these measures. We welcome the peaceful handover of local administration in the four northern municipalities and expect the new mayors to represent the interests of all citizens,” her response to koha.net states.

Koha previously reported that the EU would not lift the measures against Kosovo even after the handover of local authority in the north to the Serbian representatives who won the elections.

According to the portal’s information, France and Italy, supported by Spain, Hungary, and Slovakia, opposed the lifting of the measures imposed on Kosovo at the last meeting, while “at least 13 states requested their removal.”

According to statements made by some European diplomats to koha.net, the European Commission “is hiding behind certain member states and is playing a double game.”
