Trick-or-Streets promises to be historic event
Trick-or-Streets returns to New York for its fifth edition, and this year it promises to be a historic event.
In the days leading up to Halloween, with the celebrations reaching their peak on October 31, the city will close a record 160 streets and plazas to traffic across all five boroughs, allowing people of all ages to enjoy one of the city’s most beloved celebrations, CE Report quotes ANSA.
Among the planned activities will be trick-or-treating, with 75,000 free candies distributed by the New York City Department of Transportation, face painting, live performances and music, games and interactive shows, arts and crafts, and other family-friendly activities.
According to the city administration, Trick-or-Streets was created to increase pedestrian space during Halloween and in the days leading up to it, traditionally one of the busiest nights of the year on the streets of the Big Apple.
One of this year’s new features is a collaboration between the Department of Transportation and the Municipal Art Society of New York to offer free guided walking tours in all participating neighborhoods. The tours will highlight the history, architecture, and public spaces of different areas of the city.
The Department of Transportation will also work with Street Lab, a nonprofit organization that temporarily transforms the city’s streets and public spaces into pedestrian areas dedicated to learning, play, and culture. Together with public schools, they will bring Halloween-themed games, creative activities, and other child-friendly programs to selected schools across the city.
On October 24 and 25, Governors Island will also be filled with more than 10,000 pumpkins of different sizes for the Pumpkin Point festival. Visitors will be able to take home a pumpkin of their choice for free.
The traditional Halloween parade, meanwhile, will take place on October 31 in Manhattan’s West Village. This year’s theme will be “Body & Soul/Year of the Horse,” focusing on the connection between the physical body and the spirit. The parade will open with a spectacular giant puppet shaped like a fiery horse.
