Bulgaria Expands Nuclear Ties

Energy

Bulgarian Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov emphasized the need for clear, measurable goals in nuclear energy during a meeting with Catherine Cornand, Senior Executive VP of French nuclear firm Framatome. Stankov said such clarity would drive nuclear sector growth amid its European revival, CE Report quotes BTA

The talks, held Thursday evening, focused on Bulgaria’s nuclear ambitions, including the development of Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant. While Units 5 and 6 are active, plans are underway to build Units 7 and 8, supported by fuel supply diversification. After Westinghouse delivered fuel for Unit 5 in 2024, Framatome is set to supply Unit 6 in 2026.

Stankov also discussed using nuclear energy to support data center development and maintain Bulgaria’s status as a net electricity exporter. Recruitment and retention of skilled nuclear workers was highlighted as vital for new projects, including potential pumped storage hydropower.

The partnership with Framatome is seen as central to fuel diversification, safety, and long-term energy security in the region.
