Bulgaria Starts Euro Transition
Bulgaria has officially entered the euro phase-in process, aiming to adopt the European currency on January 1, 2026, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced Wednesday following the release of positive convergence reports by the European Commission and the European Central Bank, CE Report quotes BTA
Zhelyazkov emphasized a calm and transparent transition, guided by principles designed to avoid price speculation and protect consumers. “The introduction will be phased and predictable. We aim to eliminate unfair commercial practices and prevent abuse of consumer trust,” he stated at a briefing in Sofia.
The Prime Minister hailed the reports as a point of national pride, recalling Bulgaria’s long path toward European integration — from the 1990s reform efforts, through the EU accession in 2007, and overcoming multiple crises. “Bulgarians have worked with determination to earn the trust and recognition of the EU,” he said.
