Pizzeria slammed for charging 1.50 euros to remove tomatoes

In the southern Italian city of Bisceglie, a pizzeria came under heavy criticism after charging an extra €1.50 for the absence of tomatoes on a pizza and another €1.50 for a lactose-free version.

The case was made public by the famous swimmer Elena Di Liddo, who posted the bill on Instagram, CE Report quotes ATA.

Di Liddo had to pay an additional €1.50 marked “senza pomodorini” (“no tomatoes”) — on top of the original price of the pizza (Tricolore) at €14 listed on the menu in the southern Italian city of Bisceglie.

She was also charged another €1.50 for ordering a lactose-free version of the pizza.

“Paying €1.50 for something I didn’t even eat is really sad and shameful. Is this even legal?” wrote the 31-year-old, posting the bill on her Instagram account.

The issue was covered today by several Italian newspapers. The pizzeria that applied the extra charge initially did not comment.

Restaurants in Italy have repeatedly faced backlash in recent years over similar practices, including extra charges at the counter for a small glass of tap water.

There have also been similar incidents that angered visitors — such as charging extra for cutting a toasted sandwich in half, requesting a spoon, or getting a glass with ice.
