RK Vardar 1961 secures first victory of EHF European League main round
RK Vardar 1961 from North Macedonia secured their first victory of the EHF European League main round after defeating German side MT Melsungen 37:33.
With this win, Vardar drew level on points with SL Benfica in Group 3, CE Report quotes MIA.
After a 3:3 start, the visitors from Germany went on a 7–1 run to take a 10:4 lead. During that period, the players coached by Ivan Čupić made several technical mistakes, but they managed to reduce the deficit by halftime, trailing 18:19.
At the beginning of the second half, Vardar took a narrow lead, and after a 26:26 scoreline, the “Red and Blacks” produced a 5–1 run to go ahead 31:27, which proved decisive for the victory.
Jaka Malus was Vardar’s top scorer with 10 goals, while Reynir Stefánsson was the match’s overall top scorer with 12 goals. Miloš Vlah delivered an excellent performance in goal for Vardar with 14 saves, several of them coming at crucial moments when the result was being decided.
In the other Group 3 match, IFK Kristianstad lost to Benfica 34:38.
Despite the defeat, Melsungen remain top of the group with six points. Vardar and Benfica have four points each, while Kristianstad sit on two.
In the next round, on March 3, Vardar will host Benfica.
